confickerAs expected, the much awaited zero day for the Conficker worm (aka. Downadup) has sprung back to life when the date turned to April 1, the set date for the malicious activity of the said malware. Security centers have been waiting for the worm to come back to life and as expected it did, issuing re-configured processes and spreading malware to more computers worldwide. The widespread distribution of the worm has been worrying security experts who have been working hard to counter the damage the malicious worm causes, to some success for the world’s security software have been able to protect the rest of the world form the damage it would have caused.
But after all their effort, the latest estimated places infected computers at around a couple of million which is high considering the computer systematically looks for security vulnerabilities in a computer system, finding a hole, it uses it first to spread itself, mailing copies of itself to other computers. This year, experts have noted a considerable spread of fake sites that install malware onto computer systems which have no up to date security protection. The worm’s creator/s eludes capture but they have been able to narrow the gap to somewhere in Korea where the modifications to it’s operating routines were traced to have come from. Microsoft is offering a $250,000 dollar reward for the capture of the perpetrators but till this date none have been successful so far.
